    What's Important to You?

    Reputation

    Collaborative, Cooperative, Consensus-Driven.

Among the AmLaw 200 firms, few are known to be as collegial as Goulston & Storrs, with a partnership structure that provides for input by all directors into setting the strategic direction of the firm. We are by nature and strategy a consensus-driven organization. Directors meet monthly and are encouraged to work cross-offices and cross-practices. At G&S, relationships among the directorship are as important as relationships with clients. Our Co-Managing Directors hold frequent luncheon discussion roundtables with 5 – 8 directors at a time to allow for directors to ask and receive communications about firm management.

Our high associate satisfaction results in little to no turnover during a matter or deal with a client. From the first year the firm was considered, The American Lawyer has consistently ranked Goulston & Storrs among the Top 10 in the Nation in its mid-level associate satisfaction survey.

    Management Structure

The firm is managed by two Co-Managing Directors and an eight person Executive Committee, all serving three-year terms. The Executive Committee is comprised of partners across practice areas and across levels of seniority. There are monthly Directors meetings where all Directors in all offices have a seat at the table and are welcomed and encouraged to participate in firm strategies and matters. The larger practice groups (real estate, corporate, litigation and private wealth) have practice group co-chairs.

    Compensation Structure

    Single Tier Partnership
Among the nation’s top 200 firms, only 15% have single tier partnerships; and only 3 of Boston’s top 10 firms have a single tier. G&S is proud that our single tier structure reflects the true meaning of partnership.

Our compensation system requires collaboration and teamwork in servicing our clients. It is a subjective system and is determined by an annual rotating compensation committee, comprised of directors across practice areas and across seniority levels. All directors are encouraged and expected to meet with the compensation committee each year to provide feedback about firm members. New lateral director hires come in on a 1-2 year set contract before going into our compensation system strongly encourages collaboration and teamwork.

    Supporting a Lateral Practice

Cross-servicing clients and increasing wallet-share one client at a time is the cornerstone of our growth and decades of high client retention. Our unique culture and collaborative environment fosters the expansion of a lateral’s practice without losing relationship management and responsibility.

      - Phil Herman, Director, New York and Boston office

“One of my highest professional priorities is to work in a truly collaborative and respectful environment, where instead of internal competition the goal is to work together to make a quality practice with strong internal and external relationships so that the rising tide lifts all of our boats. These goals support a low-ego culture of mutual respect and support that makes coming to work a pleasure.”

“The constant validation of the firm's inclusive culture never ceases to amaze me. I didn't know what he meant then, but I certainly understand it now. Although difficult to fully capture in words, Goulston is a place where everyone's opinion counts and where important decisions are made by building a consensus, with the ultimate goal of doing what is right over the long term and in a manner that is consistent and preserves the firm's culture. With these principles, practicing law here is extremely rewarding and, dare I say, fun."
      - David J. Rabinowitz, Director, New York office

“…G&S truly practices law the way it should be practiced- as a team, without the competitive mentality present in many other firms…it is possible to do very sophisticated and satisfying work, make an excellent living and enjoy the practice of law…”
      - Dennis Moyer, Director in the DC office

“G&S lawyers and staff are intensely committed to their projects, yet they also foster a humane, collaborative approach to law and work in general…I love being part of this culture.”
