A good deal of discussion centers on the coming “Retail Apocalypse” and how digital platforms will eliminate the great majority of retail-oriented real estate in the coming years. The effect of the digital economy on physical retail is much more nuanced, however, in that the retail landscape itself has changed. Evolving social factors such as a greater desire for experiences as opposed to physical goods, “showrooming,” “omnichannelling” and other circumstances portend not a coming apocalypse but instead a fundamental change in the retail landscape, and of course, the law affecting it.
